4. SOUNDBITE (English) Atefeh Riazi, Chief Information Technology Officer, United Nations:
“One in five people experience disability at some point in their life. So, whether it’s a result of a life event or of aging, we are seeing those numbers grow. And so, you know, the question of inclusivity numbers, at the first, at the entry point, we still have to take in consideration that through the whole life of working for this organization or the people that we are serving outside of this organization, that disability may come as a temporary situation they need to deal with.”
5. SOUNDBITE (English) Rodger DeRose, President and CEO, Kessler Foundation:
“You know, there are visible disabilities that you can see when there is a wheelchair user like Chill, on stage here right now, and then there are hidden disabilities. And so, corporations wrestle with this issue as well in terms of how many people they have with disabilities actually working in their organization. And for many individuals that have hidden disabilities, they don’t really feel comfortable stepping forward unless they recognize that the organization’s culture is really open to accepting people with disabilities.”
6. SOUNDBITE (English) Daryl “Chill” Mitchell, Actor, NCIS: New Orleans:
“It’s very moving and touching for me because Rodger came into my life about 10 years ago - about 10, 12 years ago - and from that day forward he changed my life. So, when I see things that happen in their foundation, which affects me personally, and now I see how I advanced in like about, where I had been from that moment he told me. And he said, you know what, you are in a dark place. And now I’m working, and I know just keep striving and pushing forward. I said, this is the best that ever happened to me, being able to have a job, being able to continue in the field that I have been working in, and to be able to do it at a high, high capacity, and doing it with such reverence that it just moves me. And I say, you know what, it’s my duty to come out here and speak my truth.”

Storyline

Marking the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the United Nations today (3 Dec) published its first-ever flagship report on disability and development in the hopes of fostering more accessible, and disability-inclusive societies.

At a press encounter at UN Headquarters, Assistant-Secretary-General Atefeh Riazi noted that “one in five people experience disability at some point in their life” and said that the United Nations “have to take in consideration that through the whole life of working for this organization or the people that we are serving outside of this organization, that disability may come as a temporary situation they need to deal with.”

The President and CEO of the Kessler Foundation, Rodger DeRose, said there are visible as well as “hidden disabilities.” As such, he said, “corporations wrestle with this issue as well in terms of how many people they have with disabilities actually working in their organization,” and “for many individuals that have hidden disabilities, they don’t really feel comfortable stepping forward unless they recognize that the organization’s culture is really open to accepting people with disabilities.”

Actor Daryl “Chill” Mitchell, from the show, NCIS: New Orleans, highlighted the help and encouragement he received from DeRose and the Kessler Foundation.

He said, “now I’m working, and I know just keep striving and pushing forward. I said, this is the best that ever happened to me, being able to have a job, being able to continue in the field that I have been working in, and to be able to do it at a high, high capacity, and doing it with such reverence that it just moves me. And I say, you know what, it’s my duty to come out here and speak my truth.”

The Report on Disability and Development 2018, demonstrates how disability-based discrimination has severe effects on transport, cultural life, and access to public places and services, and thus, the report leads with a push to change urban environments to make them more accessible.

In 2006, the United Nations adopted the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and its Optional Protocol, geared toward protection of the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities, which requires associated parties to promote and protect their human rights.
