UN Helps Handicapped Children In Russia
More than most Russian families, those with handicapped children have experienced the hardship associated with the transition from a state-owned to an open market economy. Those unable to care for their children often allow them to be institutionalised. Institutions must be transformed into rehabilitation centres to enable the disabled to reintegrate into society. The UN Children’s Fund, UNICEF, is donating equipment like wheel chairs to help these children.(2'38)

Nena Tereze School in Kosovo is a special school for children who are both deaf and mute. It has been in existence for 50 years and most of the students live on campus and go home for the weekend and holidays. The curriculum is the same as in regular schools, however the students are taught in sign language, which will help them once they enter the job market.

During the brutally cold winters in Mongolia, many street children in Ulaanbaatar find their best refuge is under their feet. They are called manhole children because they seek the warmth of the city’s underground pipes to survive. UNICEF is supporting the government’s efforts to send social workers to help needy parents in poor communities on issues of child-care and protection during financially hard times.(3'3)
